EU Orders Meta to Restore WhatsApp Access for Rival AI Chatbots

The European Union has ordered Meta Platforms to restore access to WhatsApp for rival artificial intelligence chatbot makers. The move is aimed at preventing harm to competition in the growing market for AI assistants, which regulators believe are developing rapidly and becoming increasingly important for consumers across Europe.

In a statement, the EU's executive Commission said it was imposing 'interim measures' while it continues its investigation into WhatsApp's artificial intelligence policy. The commission has concerns that Meta is breaching EU law by blocking competitors from offering their AI assistants on the platform.

The order specifically requires Meta to allow OpenAI and other large companies to use the paid-for WhatsApp Business product for free, at least until an antitrust investigation is complete. This decision was made after regulators found that Meta's fee for access was 'not economically sustainable' for rivals.

According to EU officials, this move is a response to concerns raised by rival AI chatbot makers who were being prevented from offering their services on WhatsApp due to the company's updated terms and conditions. The commission began scrutinizing these changes last year after discovering that they effectively blocked third-party AI companies from using the platform.

The investigation into Meta's business practices has been ongoing since April, when regulators threatened to force the company to reinstate access for free if it didn't comply with their demands. If Meta fails to meet this order, it could face fines of up to 10% of its annual revenue.

Regulators have emphasized that they are taking swift action in response to the rapidly evolving AI market and the potential risks of companies being forced out of business due to restrictive practices.
